I don’t know what it is about January, but every year it rolls around with a familiar feeling of dread in the pit of my stomach (mashed up with all dat Crimbo choc). Because while seemingly everyone else in the world is out moulding their version of a ‘new me’ and pushing out resolutions all over the shop, I always get the same unsettling feeling, which I hate to say can only be described as a seeeeeerious case of CBA. To those not yet fluent in acronyms, that my friends, is a big fat Can’t Be Arsed.
I’ve never really been one for making resolutions as I’ll inevitably break them a week into the fresh new year, but feel that without them, things definitely halt to a jumbled-up lull after the rush of Christmas has subsided. Instead of getting into the swing of things and storming into 2017 with allllllll the ideas, I came to a complete stop and just couldn’t bring myself to do much of anything at all, especially when it came to this lil’ corner of the interwebs (this blog post alone took three weeks to write).
Instead, my 2017 so far hasn’t really consisted of anything other than lounging about in my Potter pants binge-watching all the TV, which yes, is real freakin’ attractive. By all means it’s great to switch off every now and again to recharge and let inspiration find you, but actually that sloth life’s been driving me a little cray, so it’s time to get my arse into gear again. Now if you’ve ever actually met me, you’ll know that I am no gym bunny and love to gorge on gin, so a pile of exercise or an alcohol ban just weren’t gonna cut it in the motivation department – nope, no thanks, not even an option – so here’s the Lazy Gal’s Guide to Getting Motivated in January.
Introduce some new music to your life
The cold, wintry months are the best time to treat your ears to some fresh new sounds, as it’s prime touring time for new artists, and you don’t feel so bad cramming into a dark room when the weather’s pretty bleak outside. Get your crew together and go check out a band you’ve never heard of at your local venue, or even something as simple as clicking through to the Related Artists tab on Spotify and giving someone new a chance – you’ll be surprised what getting excited about a fab new banger can do for your motivation levels.
If you’re one of those guys, you could even whack together a whole new playlist to go with that new gym membership…

Reflect on everything you’ve already achieved
Last year was pretty bloody mega for me, from exploring America for the first time to having the time of my life at festival after festival during the summer, so a year like that will be pretty hard to top. But taking the time to reflect on how absolutely incredible the opportunities I was given and the fantastic memories and friends I’ve come away with really is all the motivation I need to continue to get out there, see the world, and just experience all the things I’ve always wanted to.
Life really is about the little things, and when I think back to watching the pelicans glide past whilst taking in the sunset on the beach on my very first night in LA, or finally getting to the Bluebird Cafe, nothing could make me feel more buzzed about the things I’ve already done, and the things that are yet to come.
To celebrate everything that last year was for me, as well as thank all the awesome brands that collaborated with this little blog, and especially you guys for wading through my waffling and sticking with me this far, I’ve put together my own little motivation package just for you!
