If sipping your morning cuppa on your balcony while gazing out over the open ocean is your jam, then a stay at the Walpole Bay Hotel should be top of your list on your jollies to Margate. Okay, so the colder months may now be upon us, but that shouldn’t stop you from getting out there and exploring, right?
A lazy lie-in with muchos tea and biccies followed by a walk on the beach snuggled up in your hat, scarf, and Autumn layers makes for a dreamy Sunday, and that was pretty much the plan during my recent trip. I woke up to the sound of the waves, and although it was a little cloudy during my stay, it didn’t take away from that feeling of complete relaxation that being by the sea brings. I’m such a sucker for a seaside getaway.
Staying at the Walpole Bay was so, so cosy, as not only is it a majestic hotel but also doubles as a museum, with antiques dotted around from times gone by with details of what they are and where they’re from, and works of art lining each winding hallway to peek at while ambling back and forth to your room. I stayed in the super cute Room 308 (would ya just look at that wallpaper?!) which the hotel boasts as having a proven track record in curing writers’ block, and it’s easy to see why when you roll out of bed to the views displayed just two feet away from you – I could definitely get used to waking up to that every morning!
Located a short drive/bus ride or a brisk 30-minute walk along the coast from Margate town centre, Walpole Bay is fantastically located to be within reach of the trinket shops and vintage gems in town, as well as being far enough away to be perfectly peaceful. Standing proud on a clifftop, the steps to the beach are literally just at the end of the short street, which was completely empty for most of my stay – making for much Instagrammable material (I know, I’m that guy) or clearing the cobwebs to focus on knuckling down on that new novel you got brewing.
If it’s inspiration you’re after, this is the break you’re craving, especially as the lovely owners are currently offering complimentary stays for a ‘novelist in residence’ looking for some creative refreshment! Cool, huh?
Fancy staying the night? Check out the hotel here.
My stay was complimentary, but all good words my own.
